WHEN A SHARED MOMENT BECAME AN ARTWORK
It was an early morning walk with a friend and the dew were shiny on the dry grass and plants. One of those sights that had to be captured and shared with Sonja. We like to share photos of the beautifully ordinary like this. A walk is almost never just a walk because some steps become moments to memorise and then to inspire an artwork.
Use what you have
We have canvas, paint and we have time. Sonja and I decided that we need to start painting and we have set three days a week aside for just that. For some reason painting with company is a lot easier than painting alone.
We have a few small canvases that were blank, and those are the canvases we want to finish first. For now, we have enough paint between the two of us. And whose paint had become a blurred line. We recently bought golden paint which we love and used in this painting.
Painting something does not come spontaneously. We need a reference, except for doodling of course, and in this case my early morning photo was the reference. Sonja loved the picture, it even became her phone’s background. But she would have preferred to have seen the play of the sunlight on this day herself. However, she is the one who manifested it on canvas.
Usually when we paint, we start by painting a background even before we know what specifically we are going to do. It is a way for us to start. Let’s say it is how we warm-up. Then we use our reference to create the image. First the colours, then the light and shadow and then little details.
The Beauty of Nothingness
This artwork that Sonja created is nothing really, there is no focal point, only grass and the play of light. But we see life. We have a thing for light that draws us. We love God’s creation and that is probably why we are inspired by extraordinary ordinary things. We never want to lose our sense of wonder.
The Two Tall Artists
